Įgyvendinant Vilniaus universiteto 2015–2017 metų strateginį veiklos planą Religijos studijų ir tyrimų centras integruotas į Filosofijos fakultete įsteigtą Filosofijos institutą, ir nuo 2018 m. vasario 1 d. veikia kaip Kontinentinės filosofijos ir religijos studijų katedra. Buvusi RSTC biblioteka toliau veikia kaip Filosofijos instituto biblioteka.
Religijos studijų ir tyrimų centras (RSTC) VU buvo įkurtas 1992 m. pabaigoje.
Atkūrus Lietuvos Nepriklausomybę ir susidarius galimybei grįžti prie europietiško universiteto modelio, iškilo klausimas, kokio tipo struktūrinis padalinys galėtų atitikti religijos studijų ir tyrimų poreikius.
Įvertinus atkurtosios nepriklausomos Lietuvos akademines realijas ir poreikius, buvo nutarta ne atkurti Teologijos fakultetą Vilniaus universitete (toks fakultetas jau buvo atkurtas Vytauto Didžiojo universitete), o įsteigti šiuolaikiniams Europos universitetams taip pat būdingą struktūrą – Religijos studijų ir tyrimų centrą.VU RSTC yra tarpdisciplininis, nekonfesinis ir atskiras (akademinio kamieninio padalinio statusą turintis) struktūrinis padalinys. Nuo 1995 m. RSTC vykdoma magistro studijų programa.
